The Story behind Reading the Work
A framework built from paying close attention to what artwork keeps doing.
Reading the Work grew from years of asking the same question across hundreds of drawings.
Reading the Work is an independent observational research practice exploring recurring patterns across artists' bodies of work, and how recognising those patterns can help artists better understand their own practice.
What keeps appearing?
When artwork is viewed as a collection rather than one piece at a time, recurring patterns, behaviours, themes, and visual tendencies often become easier to recognise.
Through years of drawing practice, observing collections of artwork, and working with volunteer artists, those observations gradually developed into a framework that helps artists recognise what their work may already be communicating.
The goal is not critique.
The goal is recognition.
WHERE THE FRAMEWORK BEGAN
It started with a personal question:
"What keeps appearing across everything I make?"
Certain structures, atmospheres, recurring interests, and visual relationships continued appearing long before they were consciously intended.
Rather than asking what each individual artwork meant,
the question became:
What becomes visible when the work is viewed together?
That question became the foundation of Reading the Work.
WHAT READING THE WORK IS NOT
Reading the Work is not traditional critique.
It is not a score.
It is not an evaluation.
It does not tell artists what they should make next.
Instead, it observes what already appears consistently across submitted artwork.
Recognition often comes before advice.
When artists recognise recurring behaviours within their work, decisions about statements, portfolios, collections, and future directions often become easier to make.
