As repeated ideas, structures, relationships and ways of making become visible, artists often begin recognising patterns they hadn't noticed before.
The goal isn't critique.
The goal is recognition.
Step 01
Submit your work
Submit between five and ten artworks.
They may be completed pieces, works in progress, or a developing collection.
Reading the Work begins with the work you already have - not the work you think you should have.
Step 02
Looking across the work
Rather than evaluating each artwork individually, the reading looks across the submitted work to identify what consistently appears.
Recurring visual behaviours, structures, themes, atmospheres, relationships, and emerging patterns begin to form a broader picture.
Step 03
What keeps appearing becomes visible
As recurring observations accumulate, connections become easier to recognise.
Rather than isolated observations, the reading identifies the patterns that continue appearing across the submitted work.
Often these patterns have already been influencing the work long before the artist consciously recognised them.

Written reading delivered
You'll receive a written PDF reading bringing together the recurring patterns, behaviours, themes, structures, and connections observed across your submitted work.
The reading is designed to become a reference you can return to as your practice develops.

What kind of artwork can I submit?
Reading the Work works across drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, digital work, photography, and other visual practices.
The framework looks for recurring behaviours rather than medium-specific techniques.
Works in progress are welcome.
Do I need an established practice?
No.
Pattern Discovery Reading was developed specifically for artists who are early in their practice or exploring a new direction.
Five to ten artworks is enough to begin recognising recurring patterns.
Will this help with my artist statement?
One of the most common outcomes of a Reading is clearer language about your work.
By identifying the recurring patterns, behaviours, and themes already present across your artwork, Reading the Work provides observations that often become the foundation for artist statements, portfolio descriptions, exhibition proposals, and conversations about your practice.

How long does it take?
Readings are typically delivered within 7–10 working days after your artwork has been received.
You'll receive confirmation when your submission arrives and another notification once your reading is complete.
Can I submit unfinished work?
Yes.
Unfinished work is often particularly revealing because recurring interests frequently emerge before artworks feel complete.
Reading the Work observes what is present - not what is polished.
